A writer enters another writer’s home to continue her work. There, she discovers intimate pages whose sincerity becomes a threatening question. In Verity, the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel, suspicion begins with a familiar gesture: reading. But the one turning the pages has her own desires, and a few reasons to want to believe one version rather than another.

The release date for the Verity movie in France is set for September 30, 2026, as confirmed by Sony Pictures France. It comes before October 2, which Amazon MGM Studios lists as its worldwide release date. Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett form the trio around which this story of work, attraction, and mistrust unfolds.

The move from page to screen poses a particular challenge here: giving the characters a face without turning every image into certainty. This is the ground on which the adaptation deserves to be examined. Its poster and the dark romance label attached to part of its reception are not enough.

What Is The Verity Movie About?

Dakota Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, a novelist struggling to make a living from her work. She accepts a ghostwriting contract: to write for Verity Crawford, the famous author played by Anne Hathaway. Lowen moves into the Crawfords’ estate to do the job. There she meets Jeremy, Verity’s husband, played by Josh Hartnett.

The Amazon MGM Studios synopsis carefully leaves room for doubt about the documents Lowen discovers. These notes read like an autobiographical account. Their contents shake up her perception of the couple, while her attraction to Jeremy complicates how she reads them. The pages promise revelations; their existence does not guarantee their truth.

This premise sets up an uneven relationship between two writing professionals. One has a name and an audience, while the other is trying to earn a living. Lowen gains access to a work, but also to a home she depends on for her job. Her position thus blends professional interest, curiosity, and personal involvement. No twist is needed to understand why her place becomes uncomfortable.

From Manuscript To Image, An Uncertain Proof

The fact that both women are writers gives the manuscript a singular role. Lowen knows, from her own profession, that a story can create the impression of truth. Yet she must interpret these pages to understand the people she is living with. The skill that should help her read does not protect her from becoming personally involved in the story.

That is where the challenge of the film adaptation lies. A text can state an event while leaving its reader unsure about the person telling it. An image can also represent a memory, an invention, or a guess. But showing an event gives it concrete presence. Framing and editing then become decisive in maintaining a distance between what is presented and what is established.

In the setup announced for Verity, Lowen’s desire adds another layer of difficulty. The person trying to make sense of things is not outside what she discovers. Jeremy is both the object of her attraction and a character in the revelations she reads. The suspense therefore depends as much on the trust granted to Lowen as on the trust granted to Verity. This tension explains why the way the story is told matters as much as the secret itself.

A Divisive Ambiguity

The first available reviews do not share the same opinion about how well this mechanism works. In her review for Franceinfo, Laurence Houot notes that the story adopts Lowen’s point of view, shaped by her feelings. She compares the film to 1960s noir cinema and credits the cast with sustaining ambiguity. Her assessment remains cautious, however: she finds the writing too predictable and the directing choices too familiar to maintain tension for long.

Isabelle Arnaud offers a more favorable reading in her Unification review. She feels the successive leads keep the story engaging and praises the three performers. Still, she notes a slowdown in the middle of the film, before a final stretch she finds more convincing. Where Houot sees suspense that burns out quickly, Arnaud sees an uneven progression that is nonetheless intriguing.

These two takes place the disagreement around the length and renewal of doubt. They invite us to distinguish between two qualities: making a character unreadable and building a story whose revelations still surprise. An ambiguous performance can support the first without being enough to secure the second. The prestige of the cast does not, by itself, settle the question of the adaptation.

Why The Dark Romance Label Is Not Enough

Sony Pictures and Amazon MGM present Verity as a psychological thriller. The attraction between the characters gives it a romantic dimension, but that does not make thriller, romance, and dark romance interchangeable. The first is built around uncertainty and threat; the others refer to traditions and categories of love stories that need to be defined more precisely.

Adeline Florimont-Clerc is a researcher in information and communication sciences at the University of Lorraine. Asked by France 3 about these literary genres, she defines dark romance as relationships marked by physical or psychological control. She also ties its appeal to a “desire for transgression.”

The researcher does, however, warn against a distorted view of the phenomenon. In her view, dark romance’s place within New Romance is often overstated, especially because media attention focuses on certain titles. She stresses the maturity of the audience and the role of booksellers, librarians, and parents in guiding reading choices.

Applied to Verity, this distinction shifts the critical question toward representation. The issue is the place given to coercion, attraction, and the possibility of judging other people’s stories. Interest in a transgressive fiction is not enough to establish what its readers or viewers think about the behavior depicted. The manuscript Lowen discovers offers a more precise subject than broad claims about an audience’s tastes. It questions the trust we give a story because it matches our own expectations.

Where To Watch Verity And Its Trailer?

In France, the September 30 release concerns theaters. Sony Pictures France’s website provides access to showtimes as well as trailers, including a subtitled version. The October 2 announcement on Amazon MGM’s page should therefore not replace the French date in practical information.

That same studio page does not provide a streaming availability date for the film. Amazon MGM’s involvement in its production does not allow for an immediate Prime Video release to be announced. To discover Lowen’s story without knowing its revelations, the announced appointment is still the big screen.
