A 3-year-old child was found unresponsive on Monday, August 3, in the common areas of an apartment building in Lyon’s 8th arrondissement. His mother was charged with poisoning, administering a harmful substance, and abandonment. She was then placed in pretrial detention. However, the prosecutor’s office has not released either the suspected substance or the detailed autopsy results. These two elements are crucial to establishing the exact cause of death.
An Indictment Followed By Detention
The judicial investigation covers three charges. It targets “poisoning of a minor under 15” and “administration of a harmful substance to a minor under 15.” It also includes “abandonment of a minor under 15 endangering their health or safety.”
The Lyon prosecutor’s office announced to AFP that she had been placed in pretrial detention. According to Le Progrès, this measure must remain in effect at least until Monday. This delay should make it possible to prepare a hearing before the judge of liberties and detention. The indictment sets the framework for the investigation: it is neither a conviction nor public proof of the mechanism of death.
A Boy Found Unresponsive In The Common Areas
The mother had herself alerted emergency services after noticing that her child was unresponsive, according to the prosecutor’s office. Resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. The death occurred Monday morning in the Beauvisage neighborhood, without the exact address being necessary to understand the case.
The first reports differed on the child’s sex. In its Friday, August 7 update, Le Progrès reports a clarification from the Lyon prosecutor’s office. It confirmed to the paper that the child was a boy. AFP, also citing the prosecutor’s office, places the alert on Monday, August 3.
What The Autopsy Cannot Yet Confirm
The autopsy was carried out on Thursday, August 6. However, no detailed results or toxicology data have been made public. It is therefore not possible to say that it established deliberate poisoning, despite the charges in the judicial investigation.
The investigation will have to determine whether a substance was administered, which one, and in what quantity. It will also have to establish any possible link to the child’s death, the circumstances, and any possible intent. Information indicating the family’s precarious situation or social services involvement does not explain the death. Nor is it enough to establish responsibility.
