Midwest Fashion Week took the “City of Lights” by storm on March 5, 2023, with a series of fashion shows at the Paris Marriott Opera Ambassador Hotel as part of Paris Fashion Week.
As a reminder, Midwest Fashion Week is a fashion production company founded by fashion designer Berny Martin in 2006. From its humble beginnings in Indianapolis, the event has quickly grown into an international platform providing opportunities for designers, models, stylists, photographers and fashion marketing and production professionals in the Midwest region.
Pierre-Antoine and the Ecostylia Team were invited to attend these prestigious events where they had the opportunity to meet and interview the talented fashion designer Luis Machicao, whose latest collection captivated the public during his fashion show.
In this exclusive interview, we talk with Luis about his background, his inspiration and his vision for the future of fashion.
Interview
What are your most memorable experiences from your participation in Paris Fashion Week 2023?
One of the most memorable experiences of my participation in Paris Fashion Week 2023 was working with such professional models in France.
What sparked your passion for fashion design, and how has it evolved over time?
Being able to dress beautiful women is what sparked my passion for fashion. I love to see my designs working on the streets or in the red carpet.
Could you tell us about your professional background and the key steps that led you to become a fashion designer?
I’m a designer from Peru, South America, and I’ve had the honor of designing for the presidential family, celebrities, and political figures. Although I started a different career in college, I later realized that fashion was my true calling. Over the years, I have also designed wardrobes for more than 50 films.
What sources of inspiration fuel your creativity? Which designers, artists, or individuals have influenced or continue to inspire you?
I find inspiration in every country I visit. My favorite designers, of course, are Christian Dior and Coco Chanel. The sense of style they had was just superb!
How would you describe your personal style as a designer?
My personal style is very classy, very chic. I love to see women dressed with elegance and glamour, without showing too much.
Could you present your latest collection and talk about its message or concept?
My latest collection is a humble tribute to the master of masters: Christian Dior. I respect his aesthetic and silhouettes, as well as his way to dressing women in the 1950s.
Is it possible to purchase your current collection, and if so, where can it be found?
People can contact me from my website or my Instagram.
What are your plans as a fashion designer? What can we wish for you in the coming years?
I am currently working on two big projects in the United States. One of them is Project Runway, in which I am teaming up with Novant, the largest hospital management company in the South, to produce the famous TV show and then host a charity event to raise money for mental health.
The other big project involves working with the USA Olympic teams to raise funds for them to attend the Olympics in Paris in 2024.
When do you plan to return to Paris?
I’m planning to return to Paris next year for Fashion Week. If a client calls me, I’ll be there the next day.
