This Thursday, July 11, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle drew attention at the ESPY Awards 2024 in Los Angeles. The ceremony, dedicated to the year’s sporting achievements, saw the royal couple present to support their longtime friend, Serena Williams, who was hosting the event.

Serena Williams, as a loyal and therefore protective friend, once again showed her unwavering support for the Sussexes. Their friendship, which dates back to the early 2010s, has significantly strengthened over the years. Serena, present at Meghan and Harry’s wedding in 2018, has always been a strong ally for the couple.

During the ceremony, Serena presented the Pat Tillman award to Prince Harry for his commitment with the Invictus Games. She took the opportunity to throw a few jabs at the British royal family.

"It’s quite often that I find myself with real royalty, and tonight is no exception. Prince Harry and Meghan are here. Let’s give them a round of applause." She continued humorously: "But please, Harry and Meghan, try not to breathe too much tonight. Because it’s my night, and I don’t want to be overshadowed by accusations that you’re taking up too much oxygen, okay?" This remark was a reference to the perpetual criticisms from British tabloids towards the couple.

In his acceptance speech, Prince Harry expressed his gratitude to the Tillman family, and particularly to Mary Tillman, the mother of Pat. He emphasized the importance of the bond between a mother and her son, echoing his own relationship with his mother, the late Lady Diana.
