Pressure keeps mounting on Joe Biden. This time, George Clooney is playing moral arbiter by asking the Democratic president to forgo a second term. In an op-ed published in the New York Times, the Hollywood actor points the finger at Biden’s advanced age and the deterioration of his faculties. According to Clooney, Biden will not be able to beat time, no matter his past successes.
Clooney, a great dispenser of lectures and a loyal supporter of the Democratic Party, has always firmly opposed Donald Trump. After the assault on the Capitol in January 2021, he even said Trump deserved "the trash bin of history." During a recent gala in Los Angeles where $28 million was raised for Biden, Clooney reportedly noticed the 81-year-old president’s fatigue. "He wasn’t the Biden of 2020," he said.
Other Hollywood stars, such as Reed Hastings, cofounder of Netflix, and Abigail Disney, philanthropist and Disney heiress, are joining Clooney in his crusade. Hastings is calling for a more vigorous candidate, while Disney is proposing support for Kamala Harris. Some are even mentioning Michelle Obama as the miracle solution.
Biden’s health, a subject of jokes and concern, is becoming a central issue in the campaign, which works in favor of the provocative Trump, who is currently leading the polls by six points. Rumors about frequent visits by a Parkinson’s specialist to the White House have amplified the speculation, despite official denials.
Biden is trying to reassure his team by calling for unity to win the victory. He says he is determined to stay in the race and beat Trump, claiming that only divine intervention could make him change his mind.
