Christian Karembeu, 1998 World Cup football champion, expressed his pain on Europe 1 on Monday. Originally from New Caledonia, he lost two family members during the recent riots on the archipelago. These violences are linked to a controversial reform of the electoral body.
"I am in mourning," Karembeu declared, specifying that two of his relatives were shot dead. He hopes for investigations to shed light on these murders. Karembeu also mentioned the handling of the independence referendum, criticizing the date postponement by Paris.
"The referendum was supposed to take place in 2022, not in 2021," he explained. He condemns the violence on both sides. Since the beginning of the clashes, seven people have lost their lives in New Caledonia.
In his moving testimony, the athlete insisted on the need for thorough discussions so that the laws are understood and accepted by all communities. "You cannot kill people with impunity," added the ex-husband of the famous top model who recently published a shocking book, still known by the surname Adriana Karembeu, referring to the recent murders on the archipelago.
