In 2020, Ziad Takieddine withdrew his testimony accusing Nicolas Sarkozy of financing his 2007 presidential campaign with Libyan funds. The judiciary is investigating this reversal, which Takieddine claims was done in exchange for money.

After Nicolas Sarkozy in October, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy was indicted on July 9, 2024, in this investigation. The former intermediary, Takieddine, had accused Sarkozy of illegal financing before retracting in 2020, later claiming he was paid for this reversal.

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, who stated on social media that she is still currently fighting cancer, was heard twice by investigators. The first time as a witness in June 2023, the second as a suspect in early May. She is suspected of having used a secret phone line to coordinate with Michèle Marchand, nicknamed "Mimi", the organization of the interview in which Takieddine retracted. Marchand, head of Bestimage, was involved in staging this retraction.

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is now indicted for "receiving witness tampering" and "conspiracy to commit fraud against the judiciary." However, she has the status of assisted witness concerning the suspicions of conspiracy for corruption in Lebanon, another part of the investigation.

This indictment comes as Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is still not in remission from her cancer, raising questions about her ability to withstand this additional judicial pressure.

Nicolas Sarkozy, indicted for the same accusations in October, has denied any involvement. His lawyers have filed a request to annul the proceedings and move the investigation, claiming that Takieddine’s statements cannot be credible only when they accuse Sarkozy.

A dozen other people are also indicted, including Mimi Marchand for witness tampering, and several businessmen for their alleged involvement in the withdrawal of Takieddine’s accusations. The main trial on the suspicions of Libyan financing of the 2007 campaign is scheduled for 2025.
