The Epic Flop Story of Captain America: Brave New World

Captain America in full action... but will it be enough to save the box office? Marvel was hoping for a heroic takeoff, but the film has rather flopped

The film Captain America: Brave New World started with a bang, earning $100 million at the American box office. However, it suffered a steep drop of 68% by the second weekend. This spectacular plunge echoes the recent setbacks of Marvel and raises a burning question: can the studio still captivate its audience, or are we witnessing the end of the superhero reign?

The controversies making waves

If the film has been talked about, it’s not just for its plot. The choice of Anthony Mackie, a Black actor, as the new Captain America, sparked heated debates about diversity in Hollywood. Add to that the introduction of Sabra, an Israeli heroine played by Shira Haas, and you get an explosive cocktail. For some, Marvel is overdoing it. For others, it’s a necessary evolution. Result: controversies that almost overshadow the film itself.

A mixed critical reception… and one popcorn too many

The critics have not been kind. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film peaks at 49%, a score that feels like a damp squib. On the audience side, it’s a bit more lenient with 80%, but the CinemaScore B- remains a slap for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). And the viewers? Some admitted to laughing… but not always at the right moments. When a superhero blockbuster triggers more laughter than thrills, there’s cause for concern.

A schedule worthy of an ice rink

The production of the film was not smooth sailing. Initially slated for July 2024, then moved up to May 2024, it was finally postponed to February 2025. The reason? The Hollywood strikes in 2023. Marvel also had to revise its title: New World Order became Brave New World, to avoid further controversies. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t enough.

A cast under the spotlight

The film relies on safe bets. Anthony Mackie takes up the torch left by Chris Evans), a transition that still divides fans. Meanwhile, Harrison Ford plays President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross with his legendary charisma. Some hoped to see him wield a whip rather than a presidential pen, but they’ll have to get used to it: Indiana Jones is over.

Harrison Ford in presidential mode: Air Force One or Marvel? At 81, Ford swaps Indiana Jones’ whip for White House briefings. His role as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross is raising eyebrows: a Hulk in a suit, really? Some hoped to see him crushing a cigar, not saving the MCU from a budgetary crash.

The inevitable comparison with other heroes

Brave New World is not the first Marvel film to sink quickly. Before it, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels met the same fate. Has the proliferation of superhero films finally tired the audience? Some are fed up with the “colorful super briefs.” Others, on the contrary, await each new release with hope. But one thing is certain: the golden age of the MCU is not what it used to be.

The marketing challenges of the MCU

Marvel finds itself at a strategic crossroads. How to maintain public interest? How to renew its plots without overhauling everything? Upcoming films like Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four: First Steps will be crucial. Too many new faces, and fans lose interest. Too much nostalgia, and the studio looks like a dinosaur. The balance is delicate.

A hero on a raft in search of solid ground

Captain America has always been a symbol of courage and patriotism. But today, inclusion and representation have become major issues. Brave New World tries to juggle fidelity to origins and modernity. For now, the gamble is risky, but the star-spangled icon may not have said its last word.

A superhero in search of redemption

Captain America: Brave New World was supposed to give the character a new lease on life. The box office is in free fall; moreover, omnipresent controversies surround the film. Additionally, the reviews are lukewarm. Consequently, this reflects the challenges weighing on Marvel. The MCU must win back an increasingly demanding… and perhaps a bit jaded audience. The continuation of the adventure will depend on bolder scripts and inventive staging. If Captain America wants to take flight again, it will take more than a vibranium shield.
