The mayor of Alès, Christophe Rivenq, and his family were placed in safety by the Raid. The extraction took place during the night of July 20 to 21, 2026. This decision followed the report of a potentially imminent violent plot. The Pnaco took over the entire case and opened a plain-view investigation. The perpetrators remain unknown, as does any possible link to the DZ Mafia. In this case, the threat directly targets the exercise of a local mandate.
An Imminent Threat
On July 21, Laurent Nuñez told the National Assembly that a “violent action plan” could target Christophe Rivenq. The Interior Minister believed it was imminent. After this intelligence was passed on to the ministry, the elected official and his family were extracted from their home by the Raid. Since then, they have been under protection described by the minister as “at a very high level.”
This alert does not make it possible to describe a specific scenario. A source close to the case cited by Franceinfo reported a suspected car bomb near the home. At this stage, no authority has confirmed the presence of an explosive device. Nor has any authority made public the technical evidence behind the decision to place them in safety. The elected official’s address and place of protection are not being disclosed.
From The First Threats To The Extraction
The case began on July 16. The mayor’s wife discovered threatening messages on the fence of their home. She also found an envelope containing two 9 mm rounds. The markings found on site were presented as referring to the DZ Mafia or to “DZ NG.” This alleged signature alone does not identify the perpetrators or prove their membership in a criminal organization.
On July 18, Christophe Rivenq had described the contents of the letter in an interview given to ICI Gard Lozère. According to him, it demanded an end to police operations against drug trafficking in Alès. He remained cautious, however, about the origin of the threats and left their attribution to investigators. The link between these operations and the intimidation therefore remains a lead in the investigation, not a fact established in court.
Between these initial events and the alert on July 20, security measures were reinforced. The extraction marks a change in scale. The threat no longer concerns only the elected official personally. It also targets his ability to carry out his mandate without yielding to presumed criminal pressure. The state’s response now combines specialized protection, intelligence, and a national judicial investigation.
The Pnaco Opens A Plain-View Investigation
The National Anti-Organized Crime Prosecutor’s Office took up all threats targeting Christophe Rivenq on July 21. It is acting in coordination with the specialized interregional court in Marseille. The Pnaco is the prosecutor’s office responsible for the most complex organized-crime cases or those extending beyond a single region. The plain-view investigation, opened for very recent offenses, makes it possible to launch the investigation immediately.
The announced charges cover threats or acts of intimidation intended to force an elected official in the exercise of his or her mandate. They also cover death threats against a public official. Finally, they include participation in a criminal conspiracy to prepare a crime committed by an organized gang. They provide the legal framework for the investigation and do not prejudge either the identity of the perpetrators or their guilt.
The investigation has been entrusted to the National Police Judicial Division and its regional branches. The Central Office for the Fight Against Organized Crime is among those involved. They must establish who left the rounds and the messages. They are also looking into the origin of the new alert and a possible link to a drug trafficking network.
An Attack On Local Democratic Functioning
The Pnaco believes that threats from possible criminal groups against elected officials represent a particularly serious attack on the functioning of democratic institutions. The central issue is straightforward. Someone holding elected office must be able to make decisions, work, and represent constituents without intimidation seeking to alter their public action.
On July 21, the Association of Mayors of France expressed its support for Christophe Rivenq in a published statement. It also called on the state to make the fight against drug trafficking a priority. This stance underscores the institutional significance of the case, without resolving the criminal question of attributing the threats.
At this stage, the confirmed facts are the sending of the rounds, the threatening messages, the extraction, and the opening of the national investigation. The violent plot and the reinforced protection stem from the minister’s statements. The identity of the perpetrators, any possible link to the DZ Mafia, and the reality of an explosive device remain to be established. This distinction between levels of proof will be decisive as the investigation progresses.
